Welcome

Welcome to the Coromandel Outdoor Language Centre (COLC) Activities Blog. Activities are a big part of our school program, with various organised things to do each afternoon.
Over the next few months this blog will introduce to many of our activities and the people who bring them to you.. We will use lots of archive photos so if you have been to our school, or know someone who has, there just may be a photo of someone you recognize somewhere.

Beach Walks

There are so many beautiful beaches within a short drive of Whitianga. So naturally visiting these beaches forms a large part of our activity program, especially in the summer time. Here is a selection of photos from just some of the best places, can you guess which beaches these photos were taken at?

The Ultimate Challenge

This is a great activity that always pushes someone in the group just a little further than they thought they could go.
We travel to Pauanui which is almost an hour away. That makes it one of the longest trips we do for regular activities..
The Ultimate Challenge is often used for corporate 'Team Building' and is set right in and around some big pine trees. The obstacle course and climbing ropes take you to a platform high up in the trees, and from there to the finish is a 250 meter long 'flying fox'. Lots of fun, and everyone can do it.... if you are brave enough.

Hot Water Beach

This is another of the very popular tourist attractions that is so close to our school. Hot Water Beach is only half an hour away, and here, at low tide the hot water just bubbles up out of the sand. We simply did a hole in the sand to form our own hot pool and then lie back and soak up the warmth and the beauty of the place. If it gets too hot for you a quick dip in the sea will cool you off, and then its back into the warm pool.

Fishing

When you come to coastal New Zealand one thing you must do is eat fresh fish that you have caught yourself. Our activities gives you several options for fishing on and around beautiful Mercury Bay. Whether it be surfcasting from the beach, rock fishing at Otama, or an afternoon out with Captain Pugwash in his boat 'The Wild Goose'..... we will take you to the fish, you just have to catch them.

Bonecarving

Bonecarving has long been one of our most popular activities, with many students going several times and becoming very good at it. There are several designs to choose from, most of which come from New Zealand's Maori culture. With a little bit of care and a lot of patience almost everyone can produce a carving they can be proud of, and something that will always remind them of their time in Whitianga.

Croquet

Not to be confused with cricket which is another quite different game we play here in New Zealand. We play our croquet in a lovely local park where we set up a course and hit balls around with large wooden mallets. Sounds crazy but it is really good fun. The rules are easy to learn and we usually end up having a competition that everyone wants to win.

Mini Golf

Mini golf is always fun where ever you play it, but here in Whitianga we have a brand new course and it is great. These photos are right up to date, taken at activities recently and they show some of the students that are here right now enjoying a Whitianga winter.
